Virginia’s population continues to grow leading to greater congestion on our roads. Offering employees the option of telecommuting is one way to reduce traffic congestion. Cable is the largest provider of broadband services in Virginia. Deployment is the result of a massive investment of capital in the last decade making it possible for us to provide high-speed internet access, competitive voice products, and other advanced services. The cable industry has invested billions of dollars over the last 10 years to develop the hybrid fiber-coaxial infrastructure that provides the backbone for high-speed access to the internet.
Because broadband is more secure than wireless connections, many companies require a direct connection for their employees who telework. Wireless networks may not be as secure as required by some employers. Cable providers offer secure networks and the speeds needed to efficiently telework.
Virginia should encourage the development of telework and telemedicine initiatives. Its broadband policies and statues should foster investment and growth in these areas.
